What does fashion mean?

What is fashion? Different people may have different definition for it.

Some people may think that fashion is far from them as they do not have chance to give in it or they just do not care about fashion. Some people may think that fashion is a way to express their identity. It can help others to know more about them by looking at their outfit. I think fashion have various values.

Act as a protector

I think fashion can help people to protect themselves. People will choose different style based on different situation. For example, girls may want to dress something different on special day. My friend really like dressing Lolita. She thinks that this style can help her to become beautiful. She feels more confidence for her appearance. We can see that fashion can act as a protector. Moreover, fashion can help people to connect with others which avoid them to be an outsider. Sometimes, people may not know why some style become fashion trend. However, they just buy it because those clothing become very popular. I think one of the reason for people to have this action is because they can interact with others more easily. It may provide the opportunity for them to integrate in society.

Express yourself without language

People can express themselves by dressing different outfit. Let take Lolita as an example. What do you think when you see someone dressing Lolita fashion? Someone may think that her dressing is cute and adorable. However, someone may think that those people just want to act like a child and it is disgusting. They may think that it is too exaggerated to wear those dressing which like doing cosplay. For me, I think Lolita is a fashion that can help people to express their identity. This style is cute and gorgeous. My friend always wearing Lolita and I perceived her as a cute person and love to dress up. There is no denying that fashion can help us to express ourselves without language.

Deliver history

Fashion can express history. Different styles have different stories behind them. They may come from different history background. When people interested in certain fashion, they may be interested in finding the stories and history behind them. For example, Lolita fashion is affected by Victorian clothing and styles from the Rococo period. It can be classified into three main style which are “gothic’, ‘classic’ and ‘sweet”. When people attract by certain fashion and wish to understand it, history can be spread out.

For me, fashion have different meanings and values. It is not only to help protecting people, it also helps to express something. People can find friends which have the common interest in certain fashion. They may find comfort zone for them as they feel like they are the same.
