How TV affected my life?

You may ask, is it worth for us to use so much time watching TV? Nowadays, people may not love to sit in front of the TV and they would like to play games or watch YouTube short videos instead. However, I am really addicted to different kinds of TV shows, especially Korean dramas in action, comedy, romance and historical genres. I feel relaxed and even resonate with the dramas’ main characters and sometimes laugh or cry while watching them! Are they just for fun? In this blog, I will use two Korean dramas to show that they are worthwhile and have impacted me a lot in my life.

Poster of ‘SKY Castle’

The first one is called ‘SKY Castle’. This drama is about some upper-class families living in a luxurious private residence called SKY castle. The wives help their husbands to become more successful and try to support their children whatever it takes. They try to do their best to ensure their children are able to enter the top universities, getting themselves a high-pay job after graduation. Actually, ‘SKY’ represents the top 3 universities in South Korea: Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. Students who get into these universities very likely would have a successful career path in the future. This makes me think about the education system of Hong Kong! We feel so stressed about the DSE and want to enter the top three universities. I feel empathy with the atmosphere as many other places other than South Korea and Hong Kong are intensely focused on academic results. We should rethink that academic result is not the only thing to evaluate a person, everyone has our own speciality and parents should support their children to chase their dreams.

Poster of ‘Itaewon class’

Another drama is called ‘Itaewon Class’. The story is about how an ex-criminal chases his dream and restarts his life by opening his own restaurant in Itaewon after being released from jail. He had high hopes for his future and he worked seven years to save money and opened his restaurant finally. People who faced discrimination in South Korea were employed by him, including a transgender, an ex-criminal, an orphan and a black coloured Korean. You can see how they start over to become successful step by step. This is a passionate drama that makes me increase social awareness. It is a serious social issue that ex-criminals, transgender people and coloured people face lots of discrimination in society. Also, this drama discloses that big companies(chaebols) are dominating the markets. However, I learnt that I should not give up and work hard to persist until I succeed after watching this drama.

Korean dramas play an important role for me, I can learn more, rethink my life and become more socially aware. Both dramas have some quotes that can inspire you, so I strongly recommend you to watch the above two dramas if you haven’t watched them! Can you think of other TV shows that have impacted your life? I also think that TV drama brought inspiration to us and some may also help to reflect ourselves. The TV drama broadcasted on Viu TV called We are the Littles brought touched for the audiences. This drama reminded us for passionate for pursuing something we want. Moreover, I think the TV reality shows can bring entertainment for us in the harsh reality life.

I enjoy watching Korean dramas too. I agree that a good drama can make the audiences immerse in the story and inspire the audiences to think about some issues that they did not notice in their daily live. Like after watching ‘Itaewon Class’, I do reflect how should I treat the minorities in the society without making them feel discriminated.

Thus, I think watching Korean drama can be a meaningful leisure activity.

Very interesting and inspiring passage. Unlike the normal romantic Korean dramas, I also agree that the above two dramas help us reflect a lot. I would play attention to the hidden meaning of the dramas instead of just focusing on the romantic parts in the future!

I watched so many Korean TV shows and I also like Korean dramas the most. I agree Korean dramas have the reflection of human life, part of people who do not know much about Korean dramas probably think they are all about love stories which is totally wrong. It is a stereotype. Korean dramas become much more meaningful nowadays. For example, ”Stranger From Hell” makes me have the same feeling of hardship in the workplace and it shows the dark side of human being. The main characters have to live in an ominous cheap dormitory which is located in Seoul, they all have different personalities and live in a small room respectively. To be honest, it is quite similar with…
