Nowadays, as people advocate equal rights, they have put forward different doctrines to promote egalitarianism, such as gender equality. Even though the concept of gender equality has been accepted by the public, sexism still exists in reality and social media. What I mean is not just referring to the men’s discrimination against women, but also the women’s bias on the men due to advocating gender equality.
Recently, feminism has become a fad of supporting gender equality. With the growth of feminists, it generated misandry, which means females prejudice and despise males. Some (radical) feminists believe that all men are awful and incapable due to the patriarchy’s effect. Thus, some feminists proposed that women should be given more privilege and override the men so that they may despise or humiliate the men. We can observe that radical feminists are supporting sexism instead of eliminating sexism and advocating gender equality. Therefore, it may encourage the occurrence of sexism.
Besides, misandry will occur in commenting on others. When netizens criticize the incidents involved the sexual discrimination, they may easily have bias and denounce all the men instead of the men involved. It may be because some netizens assume that men always discriminate against women, which also is a stereotype, so that they may prejudice the men instead of men involved. Therefore, the man may be belittled due to prejudice, and it will be harder to achieve gender equality.
If radical feminists continue growth, feminism may be stigmatized. As the radical feminists believe women should override others, they will force other feminists to follow their thoughts and indirectly exploit other’s freedom. For example, Papi Jiang, a famous Chinese YouTuber, is a feminist. She has been ‘attacked’ on the Internet because her son’s surname is named after her husband. Some radical feminists believe that it is a sign of a feminist succumb to the men and humiliated feminism. To me, a feminist deserves the right to name the baby’s surname after her, but it doesn’t mean that the baby’s surname has to name after the mother. Those irrational comments, which required the baby’s surname should be named after the mother, have exploited the father’s right to name the baby. In fact, it is the parent’s freedom to decide the baby’s surname after discussion, and the radical-feminist strangers have no right to criticize it. The radical feminists’ criticism makes the thing look like achieving gender equality should exploit others’ freedom and right. Actually, achieving gender equality needs understanding, respect, and discussion instead of exploitation.
As most feminists or masculinists may not have a clear purpose of achieving gender equality when supporting the doctrines, the above situation may continue to happen. But we are in the digital era, people get more information through the Internet. If people can spread more thought about gender equality even though they support feminism or masculism, the above situation may not happen in the future.
